Upcoming Opportunities

Downtown Westbrook Coalition - SWOT Analysis Community Meeting - August 30, 6-7:30PM. Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.  This is a public meeting run by the Downtown Westbrook Coalition to discuss the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) in downtown Westbrook. Organizations like DWC work because of community buy-in, which includes invaluable feedback from the people that live and work here. This analysis will also help with the application to become an accredited Main Street program, which would be a huge honor for Westbrook.

Crutches4Africa Project - August 31, 5:30-7:30PM. Rotarians from around the District have collected crutches, wheel chairs, walkers and similar assistance devices to help those in desperate need of assistance in Africa. The devices now need to be consolidated for shipment. This is a huge undertaking and additional help is needed. This project will take place at 20 Gooch Street, Biddeford. For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Tony Wagner at: tony.wagner163@gmail.com

Brews & BBQ - September 1, 4-8PM. Downtown Westbrook Coalition fundraiser dinner. In the Mister Bagel and Yes Brewing parking lot at 8 Stevens Ave. Mister Bagel is making BBQ brisket, chicken, and sausage -wine, sangria, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase; River's Edge Deli will provide sides like cornbread, baked beans, and slaw; and you can purchase brews from Yes Brewing all evening. A portion of the ticket sales will go to the DWC. Food tickets are $15 in advance, through Wednesday, August 30. Tickets can be purchased at Downtown Westbrook Coalition office, 752 Main Street, from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm or at the August 30 SWOT meeting mentioned above.  Or they can be purchased on line: BBQ&Brews Tickets

Food Drive Saturday September 9 -  9AM-2PM at Hannaford's in Westbrook, to benefit Westbrook Food Pantry and Westbrook High School Food Pantry.   Drive coordinated by Westbrook-Gorham Rotary, Westbrook Kiwanis, and Downtown Westbrook Coalition.  We will be collecting non-perishable items and accepting cash donations. You can help by dropping off donations that day. Voluteers will be needed and we hope to include Interact Club members to help.

Donate to our Club's Charity through Amazon Smile – Ongoing - If you order items from Amazon.com, even if not very often, you can help Westbrook Gorham Rotary Club Charities.  Go to http://smile.amazon.com/. Search for our Charity and select it. You may need to login to your Amazon account before being able to finalize your selection.   Then, when you shop Amazon.com (always starting from http://smile.amazon.com/) a portion of every purchase will be donated to our charity.
CLYNK for Literacy – Ongoing - Keep those cans and bottles coming! Drop off your filled CLYNK bag at any Hannaford (drop off locations can be found at: https://www.clynk.com/locations/maine/ . Thanks to those who have contributed bottles so far to help purchase books that we donate for each speaker.  If you need more CLYNK bags, they are available at each meeting.
The Locker Project at WCC
Scott Linscott and Christine Johnson had a great time at Westbrook Community Center on August 23rd helping Steve from The Locker Project give away fresh fruits, vegetables and baked goods. They joined Veronica Bates and Sarah Zwicker from Westbrook Kiwanis to unload boxes, set up tables, sort produce, help folks pick out items, and clean up at the end. While we are sad that this was the last event of the summer, The Locker Project be back at the High School sometime in September. We love being part of this effort to fight food insecurity in our community.  Look for announcements about how you can help.

A Few Words From Our President
President Bill opened our meeting on August 22, with an excerpt from the book “First, Break All the Rules” by Buckingham & Coffman. This book looks at what the world’s greatest managers "do differently". In an early chapter of the book, mountain climbing is used as a metaphor for taking on a new role and taking the steps to be fully engaged.  He sees these steps as applicable to Rotary. The stages on the climb:

Base Camp: “What do I get?” – When you first start a new role, your needs are pretty basic. At this stage you are asking, what do I get from this role?

Camp 1: “What do I give?” – You want to know if you are any good at the job. Are you in a role where you can excel? You are focused on your individual contribution.

Camp 2: “Do I belong here?” – Do my options seem to count? Does the mission/purpose make me feel my role is important. Do I have a best friend here?

Camp 3: “How can we all grow?” – You want to make things better, to learn, to grow to innovate. You can apply your new ideas if you are focused on the right expectations, if you have confidence.

The Summit – Buoyed by your mutual understanding and your shared purpose, you look out and forward to the challenges marching over the horizon.
St Joseph’s – A new Rotaract Club
President Bill Chadwick introduced our speaker, Past District Governor Sheila Rollins, by first telling us a bit about St Joseph’s College, Maine’s only Roman Catholic college. St Joseph’s was founded in 1912 by the Sisters of Mercy and was located on the grounds of the Motherhouse on Stevens Ave in Portland until 1956 when it moved to its current location in Standish.   It is now a co-ed liberal arts college situated on a 474-acre campus on the shores of Sebago Lake.  At this college, we hope to co-sponsor a new Rotaract club.

Sheila began her presentation by educating us about Rotaract, which was founded in 1968.  Interestingly, both men and women were admitted from the start, even though women were not allowed as members in Rotary clubs at that time. Rotaract can be college-based or community-based and is a community service organization for people 18-30. In our District, there is currently an active club at University of New Hampshire.

Our club has agreed to co-sponsor a new Rotaract Club at St Joseph’s College, along with the Bridgeton Lakes Region and Sebago Lake clubs.  Why sponsor a Rotaract club? Sponsoring a club provides several opportunities. For example, it is an opportunity to mentor aspiring business leaders and philanthropists. We can also make connections with young people to help them develop an interest in Rotary – a means of growing Rotary in the long term.

Our club’s role would be to appoint one or two people to be our liaison(s) to the Rotaract club, and meet periodically with Rotaract club leadership. We would support their fundraisers and invite them to support our club fundraisers.  We would also encourage them to attend our club meetings when they can.

At this time, there is a champion at St Joseph’s – a young man who was active in Interact in High School and who wants to continue with Rotary in college. Sheila will be sharing more detailed information shortly, as the new school year starts.  There are still some hurdles to overcome, but we are hopeful that the new club will move forward this year.

At the end of the meeting, we asked Sheila to sign a children’s book that was presented to the Walker Library.

Golf Classic is Fast Approaching
The 23rd Annual Rotary Golf Classic is fast approaching - Tuesday September 19, 2017. The Golf Committee is hard at work soliciting sponsors and teams, but we need "all hands on deck" to make this our most successful year ever.

The goal this year is to field at least 20 teams and reach 40 hole sponsors.  We are off to a great start - Gorham Sand & Gravel has signed on as a major sponsor again this year, and we already have several hole sponsors. Golf Committee members have been out making contacts to bring back past sponsors and to find new ones.

Please consider entering a team or sponsoring a hole.  Ask your friends, family and colleagues to join you in supporting this even. Our 2017 brochure that explains it all is available on our website at: Rotary Classic.   People can also learn about this event on FaceBook: Rotary Classic Event

Prizes for the Raffle are also needed. $10-$25 gift cards to local establishments, golf related items, or other items with value of $10 to $50 (or more!) are appreciated.  Contact Ethan Johnson to donate.

This will be our Club's largest fundraiser of the year - with your help!.
Win a trip to World Polio Day in Seattle!

As you should have seen in a recent email from DG Dave Underhill, this year, World Polio Day will be held in Seattle in recognition of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s support of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.  A generous District 7780 Rotarian has donated airfare and a hotel room for one of us to travel to Seattle for World Polio Day on October 24. This is a chance to be in the audience and see “up close and personal” what major players in this field have to say.

Make a donation to Polio Plus of at least $25 between July 1st and September 30, 2017. Each individual donor, regardless of the amount given, will be eligible for the drawing and the lucky winner will be heading west in October. If you make your donation on-line, it can be made any time right up to September 30. If you choose to do it by check, mail it by September 22 to be sure it will get to Evanston in time to be processed.  Every donation is eligible for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s 2:1 match, so your contribution is tripled.

What’s Included: Round trip airfare from Portland or Boston to Seattle, hotel room for two nights in Seattle. You are responsible for meals and other incidentals.
