Fire Chief Submits Application to Join Rotary
Andrew R. Turcotte, Westbrook Fire Chief, has submitted his application to join our Westbrook-Gorham Rotary. He is on the board of directors of Atlantic Partners EMS. He is active with Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury & Epilepsy Foundation and Special Olympics Maine.  He is a former Big Brother and youth soccer coach. Atlantic Partners EMS is dedicated to providing high quality educational and training services to healthcare facilities, public safety organizations, private/public sector corporations, and emergency medical services.
 
Andrew holds degrees in Paramedicine, Community Paramedicine, and Nursing, and is in the process of finishing his MBA. He is a member of the International Association of Fire Chief's and is an active member in their EMS Section.  He has also has completed many other intensive programs and certifications in fields of paramedicine and nursing.  He spoke to our Club in March of this year about the Sister Cities fire department exchange program between the Greater Portland area and Archangel Russia.
 
Andrew and his wife Allison live in Windham. He is sponsored by Deb Shangraw, who is currently on a roll.  Thanks Deb!
 
22nd Annual Golf Classic is Fast Approaching
The Rotary Club of Westbrook-Gorham will hold its 22nd Annual Rotary Classic Golf Tournament at the Gorham Country Club on Tuesday, September 20, 2016. The 18-hole four ball scramble will begin with a Shotgun Start at 12:00 noon.   All hands are needed to make this fundraiser a big success. 
 
Your Golf Committee is hard at work.  They need your help prior to the event in the following areas:
  • Provide or solicit Raffle Prizes
  • Encourage friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances to come play golf
  • Solicit Hole Sponsorships
  • Encourage other sponsorships:  Gold, Platinum, goody bag, etc
To help with these action items, brochures for the event are available electronically on our web site or can be emailed to you.  A few hard copies will be available at meetings.
 
Present at the Committee Meeting August 16:

During the event we will need help with:
  • Set up of canopy, signage, and registration area
  • Packing goody bags and placing on carts
  • Check-in/Registration
  • Collecting payments
  • Oversight of putting contest
  • Selling Raffle tickets
  • Drawing raffle tickets and compiling results
  • Oversight of hole in one for Truck prize
  • Oversight of hole in one for Harley Davidson prize
  • Posting all the fun we are having on FaceBook
  • Clean up, as needed.
 
This is quickly becoming our biggest fundraiser.  We hope to see you all there!

- Cookin' for those ROTARIANS
As promised, here are a few recipes from Cookin’ for those ROTARIANS (circa 1959).  In honor of canning season, we are starting with pickle and relish recipes.  Note that the convention of the time was to credit each cook as “Mrs”. Centennial Celebration – 100 for 100 - Thursday November 10, 2016- Come help Rotary celebrate our Foundation’s 100th Anniversary.  
Speaker: RI President 2010-2011 Ray Klinginsmith, member RC Kirksville MO. Portland Marriott Sable Oaks.  $100 per person . $26.50 of each ticket will be donated to the Rotary Foundation.
 
World Polio Day - Monday October 24, 2016 - Join Rotary for World Polio Day to support polio eradication. Help us reach a polio-free world. Local events are being sponsored in Districts and Clubs all around the world on Oct 22, 23 and 24. 
 
Rotary Day at United Nations - November 12, 2016 - Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and share similar visions for a more peaceful world. 
 
District Visioning Sessions - Portland area - September 15 at Husson College, Westbrook 5-8:30PM.  Additional sessions will be held in the Portsmouth area on November 3 and the Topsham area on January 17.
 
2017 District Conference - May 19-21, 2017- Samoset Resort, Rockport ME. Prior to the Conference there will be a 5K walk/run to benefit Polio Plus.

100 Acts of Good
In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation, Rotary is encouraging members everywhere to do 100 acts of good throughout the year. Let others know by posting photos of yourself on social media, along with a brief description of the act, using the hashtag #100actsofgood.
