     The Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, or do:
            1. Is it the truth?
            2. Is it fair to all concerned?
            3. Will it build goodwill & better friendships?
            4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Two New Members Inducted
President Jason and Secretary Mike were pleased to induct two new members into Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club on September 27.

Mike Sanphy is currently a Westbrook City Councilor, President of the Westbrook Historical Society, and a board member of My Place Teen Center, among other volunteer activities.  Mike was born in Portland and is a Vietnam Veteran. He started with the Westbrook Police Dept in 1968, where he served for 40 years.  In addition, he was a volunteer for a fire call company, retiring as Captain after 20 years. He also served as Westbrook's Emergency Management Agency Director for 27 years. He holds a degree from USM in Vocational Education.  He lives in Westbrook with his wife Cheryl.

Andrew Turcotte is currently Westbrook's Fire Chief and has been in Westbrook for three years.  He has been in public safety work for 20 years. He holds degrees in Paramedicine, Community Paramedicine, and Nursing. He is a member of the International Association of Fire Chief's and is an active member in their EMS Section.  He has also has completed many other intensive programs and certifications in fields of paramedicine and nursing.  Andrew has been deeply involved in the Archangel Sister City relationship, participating in a Fire/EMS vocational exchange program that brought Russian firefighters for training to the Greater Portland area. He recently traveled to Russia to participate in the training there.  He lives in Windham with his wife Allison and two daughters.

We are very pleased to welcome Mike and Andrew to our club.

Bits and Pieces from Club Assembly 9/27/16
100 for 100 Dinner – We encourage members to sign up for our District’s celebration of our Rotary Foundation’s 100th Anniversary to be held on 11/10/16. See more info in the Upcoming District Events section below.

Thanks - President Jason thanked all the folks who volunteered at our annual golf classic.  The numbers are still coming in, but we expect net proceeds to be our highest in years.

Foundation - Steve Rand, Club Foundation Chair, spoke briefly about the Rotary Foundation and how we have seen funds come back for club projects the past two years (MPTC and Guatemala). We now have 11 members signed up for Rotary Direct on line.  This is an easy way to donate to the Foundation in amounts small or large, using a credit card or from a bank account.  A summary of donations is always available by signing in to rotary.org and a year-end summary is sent to each participant for tax purposes. Steve hopes to encourage at least 3 members to sign up for Rotary Direct this Rotary year.  If you are interested and need help, please contact Steve.

Guatemala Project - Bill Chadwick talked about the upcoming project in Cuatro Cayos Guatemala.  As previously announced, we have received a district grant for $2800 and the club has added $1000. This will fund a trauma bag and training on its use.  In addition, the team will be building six eco-stoves with funds donated by members and the club. Bill told us that a wells project has been added, to provide clean water to the community where stomach parasites present a significant health problem.

Rotary House - Judith Reidman informed us that the Rotary House on Dale Ave should be closing on or around October 14. Final cleanup is expected during the week prior.  An email blast will be sent out looking for volunteers to help, once a date can be determined.

Golf Tournament - Finally, we had a quick discussion of ideas to keep improving the golf tournament. The new game introduced this year, “buy a birdie”, was very popular contest that we should continue.  Pre-assignment of jobs has been tried in the past, but has not been very successful. However, it was suggested that we try to at least identify a point person for key areas. For example, a lead person be designated who will hold a meeting at the registration table that morning so all who are working in that area are clear on the process and their role. Jack agreed to put together a booklet of activities and things that need to be done, perhaps including a check list.  There was consensus that we need more help with securing hole sponsorships and that a sub-committed be formed to focus on that.  It was also suggested we have a sub-committee focus on soliciting teams, with a point person who will be responsible for providing counts to Gorham Country Club. A good number of teams to target for next year is 18 (we had 14 this year).
