District Assembly 2019
Six Westbrook Gorham Rotarians attended the annual District Training Assembly at York County Community College on Saturday April 6.  The Assembly attracted 182 Rotarians and guests from 38 of the 40 clubs in our District 7780.

District Governor John Lobosco welcomes attendees

During the opening session we heard from District Governor John Lobosco, District Governor Elect Andy Glazier, District Governor Nominee Peggy Belanger and past District Governor Dave Underhill, each of whom touched on different topics as finish out the current Rotary year and look forward to the start of the new year on July 1.  PDG Carolyn Johnson spoke to us about using the People of Action themes to help grow Rotary.

After a short break, attendees split off into three rounds of 40-minute breakout sessions covering a variety of topics. These included workshops for Club Foundation Chairs, Secretaries, Treasurers and Club Protection officers. Sessions also provided information on writing Grants and offered opportunities to learn about best practice in club membership, public image/people of action, visioning.  There were also opportunities to learn more about Youth Exchange, RYLA, Rotaract and Interact.

At the closing general session we we heard the Rotary Story of Juan Gallego. Juan, Past President of Rotary Cub of Chelsea, Massachusetts, is originally from Columbia. He grew up in a working class family next door to a center that fed undernourished children - a place he later learned was built and supported by Rotarians. He moved to the US in 1980 and later joined Rotary.  Through his connections and his passion to help, his club has been instrumental in building a health center in a remote community in Columbia.  This center has helped the community fight malaria and has brought other care to the area, including Rotaplast cleft palate surgeries.

Finally, we learned more about Rotaryfest (District Conference).  We were encouraged to bring our families and register on the website to provide a headcount.  While this conference is FREE, a count is needed to be sure there is enough food and enough crafting supplies for the children's programming.   In case of inclement weather, a location with options for the whole family will be available.

Focus on Foundation - Clean Water & Sanitation
On April 2, 2019, Bill Chadwick announced that the Global Grant for our water project has been approved!.  Bill has been working on this grant with the Los Amates club for well over a year and is very pleased that we can finally move forward. The work will take place in the community of Pozon.

Pozon is a community of about 2000 people in the Los Amates region of Guatemala.  The community will be providing storage and distribution systems worth about $50,000.  Our grant includes drilling, pumping equipment, training on maintenance of the infrastructure, and electrical system.  The total value of the project is nearly $130,000.

Our club's donation of $1000 has been multiplied exponentially with donations by several other clubs in our District, the Celebration FL Club, the Los Amates Club, District matching funds and finally funds from The Rotary Foundation.  The District and Foundation funds are available thanks to Rotarians who donate to the Foundation. Thank you for supporting our Foundation and allowing projects like this one to happen!
Bottles for Books
This is just a reminder that we continue to purchase books for our speakers to sign and donate to our local libraries. Money collected in our CLYNK bags helps defray this cost.  Pick up a bag at our next meeting.   The Children's Librarians at Walker Memorial Library (pictured) and Baxter Library thank you.

Ongoing Opportunities
Children's Books for Pantries - We continue to supply new and gently used children's books to food pantries about every two weeks. We have been fortunate to obtain a regular supply of used books from Goodwill Buy the Pound.  We also periodically obtain new books from a couple of sources at little cost. However, the need is always greater than the supply.  If you, a family member, friend or colleague have children or grandchildren who have outgrown their books, we'd love to have them to share with children who will love them.   All ages from babies to young teens. We can also always use large print books for older readers. Bring to any club meeting or contact Christine Johnson for pick up.

Can Tabs for Ronald McDonald House - Thank you for continuing to collect can tabs. It's and easy way to help a wonderful organization! Just keep a small plastic bag or small jar in your kitchen, on the counter or in a drawer.  As you go to toss your returnable can into your CLYNK bag, simply twist off the tab first.

CLYNK for Literacy - Ongoing -  Don't forget to keep filling those bags to help fund the children's books we ask our speakers to sign for the Baxter and Walker Libraries. Extra bags are always available at our meetings.  If you have been working on filling a bag for a very long time (6 months or more), please consider returning it and starting a new one.  Thank you for your ongoing support of this fundraiser!

Donate to our Club's Charity through Amazon Smile – Ongoing - If you order items from Amazon.com, even if not very often, you can help Westbrook Gorham Rotary Club Charities.  Go to http://smile.amazon.com/. Search for our Charity and select it. You may need to login to your Amazon account before being able to finalize your selection.   Then, when you shop Amazon.com (always starting from http://smile.amazon.com/) a portion of every purchase will be donated to our charity.
