Stories
New Member Application
Second Publication:

Dr. Ariana Bailey grew up around the world as a child, living in places like Indonesia, Vietnam, and England. From a very young age she knew she wanted to be a vet. It all started on vacation with a strong desire to help street animals in Bangkok, Thailand at 10-years-old. Since then her love for animals has grown and went from a hobby to a career.

Ariana earned her veterinary degree at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. She now lives with her husband Matt in Standish and has a St. Bernard named Archer, a standard poodle named Lana, and her cat Cyril. Her main hobbies are international traveling, cooking and hiking.

Before joining Dehler Animal Clinic, Dr. Bailey practiced in both Brewer and Skowhegan, Maine. She has special interests in preventative medicine, international travel certificates for animals, and exotic medicine.
Transferring Member Application
We are pleased to announce that Joyce Heaton, currently of the Rotary Club of Millbrook (NY), has submitted an application to transfer to our club. Millbrook is a small village in the Hudson River Valley, about midway between New York City and the state capital, Albany.   Joyce grew up in Poughkeepsie NY, where her family has been for many generations going back to her mother's ancestors who were Dutch farmers in the 1700's. Her father's family were Quakers who were pushed out of NE for their beliefs. Both parents were involved in the community in different ways, setting a great example for their children.

Her husband Steve Ouelette is originally from Lewiston.  They met while working at IBM.  She left IBM after 13 years to raise her family, Madeleine 28 and Izzy 24. During this time she worked part time for a family business managing water companies in developments where people were not served by a municipality or didn't have the required volume for individual wells. After 17 years, when her youngest went to college, she pursued a lifelong dream of opening a business.  She started a small jewelry store with estate jewelry and a consignment sales program, a bench jeweler who performed all types of repairs, and a design consultant to guide the custom work.  They also showcased the work of five or six local jewelry artists.  She closed the store in February of this year after 5 ½ years in order to move to Maine.

Joyce has been a Rotarian for nearly 20 years. During that time she held various committee and board positions. One project that she chaired was New Year's Eve Millbrook, a "first night" kind of event with several activities and performances taking place in different venues around town.  The club Joyce is coming from is similar in size to the Westbrook-Gorham Club.
Transferring Member Application
We are pleased to announce that Mody Botros, currently of the Bridgeton-Lake Region Rotary Club, has submitted an application to transfer to our club.  Mody recently left a position as Creative Officer at St Joseph's College.   He now works as a Sales Consultant at Berlin City in Portland.

Mody, who has over 25 years of experience in graphic design and branding, was previously Founder and President of About Time Graphics.   He holds a BFA Graphic Design from Alexandria University (Egypt).  He also attended Mass College of Art and University of Southern Maine School of Business.

He lives in Bridgeton ME and is a Past President of the Bridgeton-Lake Region Club.  He has been a very active member of that club, including some amazing work with their Interact Club which included his daughter Amanda.  See the 2016 YouTube video of their service project to Domincan Republic at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hZktW7Dk9s

IDEXX Paul Harris Fellow
To thank Idexx for their strong support of Gift of Life over the years, Westbrook-Gorham Rotary honored Idexx Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Ayers with a Paul Harris Fellow.  We greatly appreciate their support of this program which brings children to Portland for life-saving heart surgery at Maine Medical Center. Accepting on Jonathan’s behalf was Pete Dewitt, Senior Communications Manager.

This recognition of Idexx and Jonathan was suggested by Paul Emery.  Unfortunately, we were not able to present the award prior to his passing.

IDEXX - Growing in Westbrook
On May 29, Idexx Senior Communications Manager Pete Dewitt and Communications Business Partner Abigail Ingalls were our guests and speakers. Twenty-five Rotarians and guests listened as Pete and Abigail shared some background about Idexx and what we have to look forward to in Westbrook.

In 1983, AgriTech was founded in Portland by five employees with the goal of detecting diseases in livestock. In 1988, the company name was changed to Idexx. In 1991, the company went public and moved to Westbook.  Idexx now employs over 2100 people in Westbrook, and about 7000 worldwide in 105 locations, serving customers in over 175 countries.

Idexx recently broke ground on a 135,000 sq ft $62M expansion at their World Headquarters off Eisenhower Dr in Westbrook. This expansion is slated to open in September 2019 and will house about 600 additional employees. The new building will be called the Synergy East and will house primarily office and conference space with lots of natural light and open space.

Scenes from the groundbreaking ceremonies on May 11

The company’s stated purpose is enhancing the health and well-being of pets, people and livestock. The Companion Animal Group now comprises about 87% of their business with Livestock Poultry and Dairy Group representing just 6%. The other 7% represents water quality and other testing.   All of their R&D takes place in Westbrook, as does about 90% of their manufacturing of diagnostic devices.  Idexx now invests over $100M per year in R&D. In fact, they hold many US Patents, about 170 to date!

Idexx, recently named a Fortune 1000 Company, is committed to the local community.  Their Westbrook campus features environmentally sustainable design, open-concept office areas, adopt-a-garden, and a 9,000-square-foot fitness center with an employee health clinic.  In 2019-2020, they expect to expand their trail network to connect with other local trails. Globally, Idexx employees volunteered over 12,000 hours in 2017.
