They are raising funds to sponsor 200 kids by June 30. If you can help, go to http://myplaceteencenter.org/donate/ or send your donation to 755 Main Street, Westbrook, ME 04092. $80 funds a kid for one month.  $960 funds a kid for one year.

The Locker Project - Note change of time for rest of School Year due to elimination of early release. Fresh food and baked goods distribution at Westbrook High School in the cafeteria.  Two or three volunteer needed for each of these upcoming dates.  Approx 1:45-3PM each time.  Sign in at front office and go to cafeteria. Wednesdays May 16, 30 and June 13. First event at Westbrook Community Center will be June 27. Help lay out food on tables and interact with the kids to encourage them to take items. You will be a welcoming presence, making sure people know they are invited to take food. Everyone is invited to bring food home with them. This a great way to de-stigmatize free food distributions, particularly in the case of fresh food that would otherwise be wasted. If you can help on any of these dates, please contact Christine Johnson.  For more information, or to donate, visit their website: mainelockerproject.org

FBC Westbrook Free Community Meal - Saturday May 19. Monthly, free, community dinner. Whether you are hungry for a delicious meal or hungry to get out and interact with others, they would love for you to be their guest. Yes, you can donate toward next month's meal but it's not necessary. This is not a fundraiser, it's a community connecting night with great food. They've been doing these dinners for going on 10 years. Come and bring a friend .

WHS Interact Update
Dr Bruce Dyer introduced the current President of WHS Interact, Morgan Kendall. Morgan is headed to USM in the fall to major in Entrepreneurship. Bruce told us that she is forward thinking and leads by example and he wanted to recognized her for her energy and passion.

Bruce Dyer

Morgan went on to tell us about some of the projects the WHS Interact Club has been up to this year. During the summer, they went to Walker Field to help hand out meals for the summer meal program. Members worked at a local soup kitchen including serving and cleaning up.  They rang bells at Shaw’s during the Christmas season for the Salvation Army. As we saw in a December Scribbler, they decorated a tree for the Festival of Trees with a Literacy theme.

At Congin School, they assisted with the Glow Dance, a fun event with lots of colors under blacklight. They created bags of creative materials given to each home room so students could create and write cards to Parkland students. They baked pies at Thanksgiving for the Westbrook Food Pantry and three members attended Rotary UN Day in New Year. Several members of Interact have participated in Big Brothers/Big Sisters throughout their high school years.

At the conclusion of the Interact presentation, Hal Thomas thanked Bruce for his support of RYLA over the years.  Bruce called RYLA a “life changing experience for our students”.  Westbrook Gorham Rotary is looking forward to supporting a record 10 students to RYLA this summer.

Project Aware
During the Interact Club visit to our meeting of May 8, Dr Bruce Dyer introduced Devin Sloan, a WHS senior and film maker with Project Aware, a non-profit that makes films for youth, by youth, about youth. He started his freshman year working on the film Hooked which is featured on the Project Aware website. This film is about a high school football player who is hurt and becomes hooked on painkillers. Devin also worked with the Westbrook Police Dept to complete a film about recovering addicts who have been clean for a while.  Later, he filmed a Public Service Announcement about social media use.

Devin is now working on a new piece that he is writing, directing and editing that is about the relationship between teachers and students. He has raised $1500 towards this project but still needs to raise $2200 more to complete the project.  If you would like to help, you can visit the Project Aware website: http://projectaware.net/ or send a check payable to Project Aware at PO Box 1244, Saco, ME 04072

All Project AWARE programs support teens telling real life stories in a powerful way. Young people create high quality movies that address social issues and make a difference. Programs also increase marketable skills teens prepare themselves for the job market.
