August 10, 2021 – Meetings & Events
There will be no regular meeting on Tuesday August 10.  The board will meet at 10:15 AM and the Golf Committee will meet at 11:30AM.  Both meetings will be held via Zoom on our regular meeting link. Contact Christine Johnson if you need the link re-sent.

Later in the day, we’ll be having our cookout at the Raymond Pond home of Woody Beach - 12 Dunollie Dr, Raymond.  Dinner will be served about 6PM, but come early if you’d like to swim or just socialize on the lawn.  If you have not yet sent your RSVP, we still have room for a few more.  Contact Christine Johnson at 207-653-0869 right away to confirm so we can be sure to have plenty of options for our main course.  BYOB, BYOC(chair) and BYOT(towel) if you plan to swim.  Water and seltzer will be available.

Upcoming Meetings with Lunch!
We will continue to meet at the Westbrook Community Center through at least the end of August – 11:30AM on 8/17, 8/24 and 8/31.   A simple lunch will be provided on those three dates with estimated cost of $10 per person.  We hope you can join us.

On September 7, we will hold our lunch meeting at the Spiller homestead at 76 Sawyer Rd, Westbrook. Phil has developed an event barn space that we will have a chance to experience. Lunch will be provided at a cost TBD.

We will not have a regular meeting during the week of our Golf Tournament – no meeting September 14; tournament on September 17.  We are hoping to return to WRVC sometime after the golf tournament, with a target return date of no later than Oct 5.  We will continue to meet at the WCC in the meantime.
Update of Rural School Library
Thanks to the efforts of Immediate Past President Kathi Perkins and a few others, we are pleased to share that Westbrook-Gorham Rotary will receive $4000 in support of a new District Grant for the Cociuba Mare K-8 school in Romania.  We will again work with the Oradea Art Nouveau Rotary Club, this time to provide new materials and furniture to upgrade the school library.

 Karen Arnold - Asking Questions
On July 20, 2021 Karen Arnold, Environmental Health & Safety Consultant, gave her new member Classification Talk.  Karen recently decided to explore Rotary when she saw a flyer posted at the Windham Post Office, and she found our club!

Karen is a native of Michigan and the middle child of a close-knit family.  She told us that she always loved to fix things and ask a lot of questions. She likes to travel, a passion that began at age 16 when she was an exchange student in Japan.  Over the years, she has remained in touch with her host family. As a child she also traveled a lot with her family within the US, including a drive to Maine.

Ongoing Opportunities
Children's Books for Pantries - We continue to collect books for our food pantries and other organizations that can get books into the hands of children. Since the need is always greater than the supply, we will distribute them now, when the opportunity arises, and will return to regular distribution when we can.  If you, a family member, friend or colleague have children or grandchildren who have outgrown their books, we'd love to have them to share with children who will love them.   All ages from babies to young teens. We can also always use large print books for older readers. Contact Christine Johnson for pick up.

Can Tabs for Ronald McDonald House - Thank you for continuing to collect can tabs. It's and easy way to help a wonderful organization! Just keep a small plastic bag or small jar in your kitchen, on the counter or in a drawer.  As you go to toss your returnable can into your CLYNK bag, simply twist off the tab first.

CLYNK for Literacy - Ongoing -  Don't forget to keep filling those bags to help fund the new children's books we ask our speakers to sign for the Baxter and Walker Libraries. Extra bags are always available at our meetings and Christine is willing to drop bags on your doorstep, if you prefer.  Thank you for your ongoing support of this fundraiser!

Donate to our Club's Charity through Amazon Smile – Ongoing - If you order items from Amazon.com, even if not very often, you can help Westbrook Gorham Rotary Club Charities.  Go to http://smile.amazon.com/. Search for our Charity and select it. You may need to login to your Amazon account before being able to finalize your selection.   Then, when you shop Amazon.com (always starting from http://smile.amazon.com/) a portion of every purchase will be donated to our charity.
