Cornhole Invitational
The 4th Annual Southern Maine Cornhole Invitational was held on Saturday October 13, 2018 at the Gorham Sports Center.  We were pleased that the Gorham Business Exchange asked Westbrook-Gorham Rotary to partner with them this year on this fun and fabulous fundraiser!

About 58 two-person teams were registered – a new record.  Teams were initially divided into “pools” where they had a chance to play all the teams in their pool. Then they moved on to “brackets”.  The top scoring teams from the pools played for cash prizes.  The lower scoring teams played for beer.   Teams of all skill levels had a great time.

Many elements came together to help make this a successful fundraiser. Pizza was donated by Gorham House of Pizza. Beer was donated by Allagash Brewing. The Gorham Sports Center made the space available at no charge.  M&H Signs provided custom cornhole boards at a reduced price. Volunteers from both GBE and WG Rotary kept things moving throughout the event, including a 50/50 drawing and a raffle with prize of a set of custom cornhole boards.

Fourteen Years and Counting
Dave Rolfe introduced our guests by offering a brief history of Westbrook High School Interact. During Dave’s Presidential year 2000-2001, he saw the wonderful results in Windham at their Interact Club and hoped to bring it to Westbrook. After securing the support of Bruce Dyer, the club was formed in 2004.  Fourteen years later, we are pleased to say the Bruce continues as the club’s Adviser.

President Kimmie Goddard spoke about some of what the club has planned for this school year. They will be volunteering at the Run the Ridge Race on Oct 20. The club will be helping with Halloween on Main St and participating in the annual Festival of Trees. At the Congin Craft Fair, they will be assisting with parking and doing crafts with kids to keep them entertained while their parents shop.

Additional planned activities include many that this club does annually: Making pies for the food pantry at Thanksgiving, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, and volunteering at Preble St soup kitchen. The club also volunteers with Partners in World Health.   At this time, the club has 23 members, but they are hoping to grow.

Also present at our meeting was Allyson LaPierre.  Allyson attended RYLA last June. She told us that it was both fun and challenging. She made lots of friends that she remains in touch with and developed leadership skills that have helped her as she now mentors members of the Freshmen class.

We look forward to hearing more from this energetic group during the year.

Presidential Citation
Assistant Governor Tony Wagner was pleased to present the 2017-2018 Presidential Citation to Immediate Past President Bill Chadwick.  Led by Bill, our Club was one of sixteen in District 7780 to achieve this citation from Rotary International President Ian Riseley.

Tony reminded us that the Rotary International theme in 2017-2018 was "Making a Difference". Strong clubs make a positive difference in our communities by focusing on RI's three Strategic Priorities:

1.  Support and Strengthen Clubs- this includes setting goals, growing membership, supporting Interact and Rotaract, paying dues on time, and reporting volunteer hours.

2.  Increase Humanitarian Service - this includes supporting the Foundation and Polio Plus, collaborating with other clubs, and developing our international water project, in addition to our many local initiatives.

3.  Enhance Rotary's Public Image and Awareness - this includes engaging our local paper, keeping social media current, communicating with club members through newsletters and updated website, partnerships with Government, and developing leaders.

Tony told us that Bill provided outstanding leadership and set the stage for our club to move to even greater heights under President Deb Shangraw.
