Upcoming Opportunities
The Locker Project at WHS - Wednesday Oct 18, 12:45-2PM. Meet rear of Westbrook High School, distribution takes place in the cafeteria. Fresh food and vegetables, along with baked goods are available for any student to take home.  Food provided by Hannaford, Shaws and other local markets. Volunteers needed to pick over and display produce on tables, interact with students, encourage them to take items. Most jobs require no heavy lifting. If you can help, please contact Christine Johnson.

FBC Westbrook Community Meal - Saturday Oct 21, 4:30-6PM. Monthly, free, community dinner. Whether you are hungry for a delicious meal or hungry to get out and interact with others, they would love for you to be their guest. Yes, you can donate toward next month's meal but it's not necessary. This is not a fundraiser, it's a community connecting night with great food. They've been doing these dinners for going on 10 years. Come and bring a friend.

Sockotber - All Westbrook schools are in dire need of socks for students. The school staff and nurses have identified socks as the number one needed item right now in all grades K-12. If you would like to help, please consider picking up a pair or two on your next shopping trip. Socks can be dropped off at any school or brought to a meeting. Let’s help get socks on those little feet before the cold weather really hits.
Intercultural Community Center Fall Fundraiser Gala – Friday November 10, 7-10PM – Dance the night way with Motor Booty Affair. Seasons Grille & Bar 155 Riverside St, Portland ME. Cash bar, appetizers, prizes, silent auction. $50 or tables of six for $300. Proceeds benefit Power School and Learning Programs of ICC. For more information or to purchase tickets: ICC Fall Gala

Toiletries for the High School - NEW!! Ongoing - Collect those tiny bottles of toiletries you are paying for during your next hotel visit and bring them home to help students in need of personal hygiene products. The HS Pantry and the HS Nurse are always looking to restock these basic supplies. You can always drop items off during the school day at the HS main office, or bring them to a meeting.

Donate to our Club's Charity through Amazon Smile – Ongoing - If you order items from Amazon.com, even if not very often, you can help Westbrook Gorham Rotary Club Charities.  Go to http://smile.amazon.com/. Search for our Charity and select it. You may need to login to your Amazon account before being able to finalize your selection.   Then, when you shop Amazon.com (always starting from http://smile.amazon.com/) a portion of every purchase will be donated to our charity.
CLYNK for Literacy - Ongoing - Don't forget to keep filling those bags to help fund the children's books we ask our speakers to sign for the Baxter and Walker Libraries. Extra bags are always available at our meetings.
Westbrook Interact Club & RYLA
We were happy to welcome Interact President Morgan Kendall and several club members to our meeting. We also welcomed two of the students who attended RYLA last summer – Emma Ranco and Sean White.

Emma and Sean each spoke about their experience at RYLA. Emma commented that being in the woods- without her phone- was outside her comfort zone. Initially, it was kind of scary, but there is a great “vibe” to the place and people came together quickly in this “life changing” experience.  Sean told us that he debated sneaking in his phone, but he didn’t. He mentioned the opportunity to get to know new people and to have the opportunity to “take charge” in a group. They both said it was a lot of fun and improved their confidence.

Morgan then talked about the Interact Club’s plans for this school year. They are asking their members to participate in three service projects and to attend every meeting unless excused by Mr. Dyer or one of the club officers. They will also be putting focus on recruiting boys.

They will be participating in the Festival of Trees again this year and are tossing around some ideas for a possibly service theme for their tree. They hope to do something to support a family around Christmas. Sopa, Rhianna and Morgan will be going to Rotary UN Day in NY in November and they are also hoping to conduct a team building retreat at Camp Hinds this winter for their entire club.

In addition, there is a 90-minute study hall with about 200 kids each week. They are looking at opportunities to complete service projects during this period that involve some of those students -  activities in or near the school.

Thank you for sharing your plans for the year and your enthusiasm with us!

District Visioning Event is This Week
There is still time to sign up. The District Vision and Planning Committee is hosting the 10th in a series of “Vision to Plan” Workshops on Thursday, October 19th, 2017.   They will continue focus on Club Leadership Development, and will add a new focus area:  Inter-Club Collaboration.   Skills developed at these workshops benefit all as Rotarians, as well as in other personal activities.

They will continue work to help clubs in sharpening the annual planning process.   The training will benefit new and experienced club leaders, committee members, and new Rotarians who are looking to make a difference.   All clubs, whether the club has been Visioned or not, are welcome.

SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time based) objectives and goals will be discussed and developed in breakout sessions.   The skills developed will help lead to stronger and more engaged clubs.
