The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say, or do:
  First, Is it the truth?
Second, Is it fair to all concerned?
Third, Will it build goodwill & better friendships?
Fourth, Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Locker Project Update
Westbrook-Gorham Rotary continues to support The Locker Project distributions in Westbrook.  In partnership with Westbrook Kiwanis and other community members, we provide volunteers to help sort and set up the donated food, help students and staff make their selections, and clean up at the end of the event.  All in about an hour each time.

Most events take place two Wednesdays a month in the WHS cafeteria at dismissal time.  In addition, we are fortunate to be able to secure and support periodic community events when school is not in session.  The most recent event was held on Monday December 30th at Westbrook Community Center in the midst of a snow storm!

Our next event is this week on Wednesday January 8 at WHS, followed by another on January 29.
Rotary at the Rose Parade
Our Sargant-at-Arms Carlo Giraulo and his wife Jane recently attended the 131st Rose Parade in Pasadena, CA.  They had fabulous grand-stand seats on Colorado Ave near several TV broadcasters and had the opportunity to see the floats up close after the parade.  This included the float entered by Rotary International with the theme Hope Connects the World .

Carlo noted that there was “some awesome artistry and engineering that was put into the floats for the Tournament of Roses. Keep in mind EVERY part is covered in natural flora. From beans to coconut, from roses to Lilies and tree bark.”

Christmas Gifts for the Libraries
Westbrook-Gorham Rotary donated two books each to Walker Library in Westbrook and to Baxter Library in Gorham in celebration of the holiday season.

“Frieda Makes a Difference” is a picture book published by the United Nations about a young girl named Frieda who embarks on a wonderful adventure to bring about positive change in the world.  “Cyrus Field’s Big Dream” is by local author Mary Morton Cowan.  It is a STEM non-fiction book for middle grade readers about one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century: laying a transatlantic telegraph cable to create instant communication between two continents.

Pictured here are children’s librarians Jeff Knox and Deb Tanguay from Baxter Library holding the donated books.
Festival of Trees
Westbrook-Gorham Rotary was proud to support the Festival of Trees again for Christmas 2019.  The Interact Clubs at both Westbrook and Gorham High Schools decorated trees, while club members and friends attended the Tips for Charity Luncheon at the Westbrook Warren Church.

The theme of the Gorham Interact's tree was Building Awareness One Tree at a Time honoring people who have fought or are fighting cancer.   Westbrook Interact's tree honors the school colors Blue & White.

Rotary’s table at the luncheon raised over $525 - our largest total yet!  Thank you to all who helped with your “tip”.   Proceeds are being donated to the Westbrook Food Pantry.

Ongoing Opportunities
Children's Books for Pantries - We continue to supply new and gently used children's books to food pantries about every two weeks. We have been fortunate to obtain a regular supply of used books from Goodwill Buy the Pound.  We also periodically obtain new books from a couple of sources at little cost. However, the need is always greater than the supply.  If you, a family member, friend or colleague have children or grandchildren who have outgrown their books, we'd love to have them to share with children who will love them.   All ages from babies to young teens. We can also always use large print books for older readers. Bring to any club meeting or contact Christine Johnson for pick up.

Can Tabs for Ronald McDonald House - Thank you for continuing to collect can tabs. It's and easy way to help a wonderful organization! Just keep a small plastic bag or small jar in your kitchen, on the counter or in a drawer.  As you go to toss your returnable can into your CLYNK bag, simply twist off the tab first.

CLYNK for Literacy - Ongoing -  Don't forget to keep filling those bags to help fund the new children's books we ask our speakers to sign for the Baxter and Walker Libraries. Extra bags are always available at our meetings.  If you have been working on filling a bag for a very long time (6 months or more), please consider returning it and starting a new one.  Thank you for your ongoing support of this fundraiser!

Donate to our Club's Charity through Amazon Smile – Ongoing - If you order items from Amazon.com, even if not very often, you can help Westbrook Gorham Rotary Club Charities.  Go to http://smile.amazon.com/. Search for our Charity and select it. You may need to login to your Amazon account before being able to finalize your selection.   Then, when you shop Amazon.com (always starting from http://smile.amazon.com/) a portion of every purchase will be donated to our charity.
